Pierre Schoeman Named in the 2018/19 Guinness PRO14 Dream Team

Congratulations to the hardworking “never-say-die” former Blue Bull Pierre Schoeman on being named in the highly prestigious Guinness PRO14 Dream Team!

Since his departure from South African shores, this SAFFA has just been one massive impressive power unit for the Edinburgh Rugby brand while instantly becoming a household name in Scotland!

Pierre Schoeman has been named as Edinburgh’s Player of the Year and Best Newcomer a short while ago as he was rewarded for his consistent performances across the Pro14 and the European Champions Cup, having helped Edinburgh reach the quarter-finals of the latter.

The loosehead prop not only picked up the Best Newcomer award – given to the player who has made the biggest impact in his first season at the club – but also the Player of the Year for the 2018-19 season. He made 17 Pro14 appearances, scoring two tries and was named Man of the Match in Edinburgh’s victory over rivals the Glasgow Warriors in December.

The select XV 2018/19 Guinness PRO14 Dream Team members were revealed on Premier Sports and eir sport after three nominees was named at each position, of which Edinburgh had six: Darcy Graham, Jaco van der Walt, WP Nel, Hamish Watson and the two winners, Mata and Schoeman.

In total, 11 clubs are represented in an XV where competition in the voting was incredibly close, and only a handful of positions were selected with a clear majority.

Edinburgh, Munster, Connacht and Ulster were the only teams with more than one player in the Dream Team which includes the Guinness Players’ Player of the Season, Mata.

Rabz Maxwane of the Toyota Cheetahs is another award winner included, the Toyota Cheetahs winger scored a record-equalling 14 tries in the Guinness PRO14 season – nine of them scored away from home – and was voted in as the left wing.

Only three players from last season’s Guinness PRO14 Dream Team have been selected with the second-row pairing of Tadhg Beirne (Munster) and Scott Vardy (Leinster) getting the nod while John Cooney’s impressive performances at Ulster have kept him in the No 9 shirt.

The team was revealed on a TV Special aired by Premier Sports and eir sport on Thursday night (May 23) where Rory Lawson, Sean Holley, Luke Fitzgerald and Murray Kinsella dissected and debated about who deserved their places and who was unlucky to miss out.
